Malaysia’s state-owned energy giant Petronas has revealed additional details about its forthcoming offshore drilling campaign in Suriname, marking a significant step toward evaluating the potential of Block 52 in the Guyana-Suriname basin. This ambitious programme comprises a three-well initiative designed to explore and appraise hydrocarbon resources, with an eye on developing an integrated project that could utilize cutting-edge floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) technology.
Petronas had previously entered into a key agreement with Noble Corporation in late 2024 to charter the semi-submersible rig Noble Developer for drilling operations in the region. At the time of the announcement, specifics surrounding the campaign were scarce, leaving industry stakeholders eager for clarity. Now, fresh information from documents submitted to Suriname’s National Institute for Environment & Development (NIMOS) sheds light on the energy company’s plans and timeline.
According to these submissions, Petronas intends to commence its 257-day drilling programme in June 2025. The operation will target hydrocarbon-rich zones within Block 52, a promising area in the Guyana-Suriname basin known for its favorable geological formations and significant energy potential. By conducting exploration and appraisal work, Petronas aims to gain a deeper understanding of the block’s reserves and assess the feasibility of future large-scale development.
The decision to integrate an FLNG solution underscores Petronas’s commitment to innovative and sustainable energy practices. FLNG technology offers a flexible and efficient means of monetizing natural gas resources, particularly in regions where traditional infrastructure may be limited. Should this approach prove viable, it could pave the way for Suriname to establish itself as a key player in the global natural gas market.
The drilling campaign in Block 52 forms part of a broader strategy by Petronas to expand its footprint in the Guyana-Suriname basin, which has become a focal point for major industry players. With exploration activity ramping up in Suriname, stakeholders and local authorities are closely watching how this operation unfolds, anticipating its potential impact on both the country’s economy and its position in the global energy landscape.
