Suriname is actively seeking to recruit Dutch workers to fulfill the labor demands generated by its burgeoning oil industry. During an emigration fair held in Houten over the weekend, Surinamese companies aimed to attract professionals willing to relocate to Suriname, as reported by NOS. The rapidly expanding oil sector requires a workforce numbering in the thousands, far exceeding the capabilities of the nation’s population of approximately 620,000.

Mila Bahadoersing from Ondernemershuis Paramaribo emphasized the urgent need for personnel across all sectors, stating, “We truly need to catch up. Suriname has a very small population, and we cannot manage this alone. We anticipate beginning oil extraction in two years, and significant professional development is necessary in our country to meet international standards.”

Recently, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Suriname to explore the industry’s potential and strengthen economic relations. “There is a tremendous opportunity here, the outlook is positive, and President Trump aims to enhance ties with Suriname,” Rubio remarked during a press conference following his meeting with Surinamese President Chan Santokhi.

In recent years, several oil reserves have been discovered off the coast of Suriname, prompting various oil companies to invest in the region, with projected annual revenues reaching hundreds of millions.

“We have a beautiful country, rich in nature and abundant sunshine,” Bahadoersing noted. “However, that alone is insufficient for a livelihood. While salaries are not yet competitive, Suriname’s economy is on the rise, and we expect to offer better wages soon. I believe our country is on the verge of significant transformation.”

The fair attracted interest from Dutch attendees, some of whom expressed a willingness to relocate. “We are considering the country,” one participant shared with NOS. “It’s a beautiful place, and the fact that we can communicate in Dutch is a great advantage.”
